Windows 7 vs Windows 10: Is it Worth the Upgrade for Everyone?

As an almost lifetime Windows user, I try my best to keep up with the latest operating systems. I started with Windows 98, ran through 2000, enjoyed XP for a long time, and then upgraded to Windows 7. When Windows 8 came out I did my best to ignore it. The Windows 8 interface was clunky, tricky and problematic. I watched a lot of friends struggle with it, and decided to keep Windows 7. Now that Windows 10 is finally out, I find myself wondering is the upgrade really worth it, or should I keep Windows 7?download

I can think of one advantage for a lot of Windows 7 users. Microsoft is offering the upgrade to Windows 10 free for a limited time. After that it will cost you. So if you like free things this might be a good time to take advantage of the upgrade. Another important reason to upgrade is support. Microsoft is famous for dropping support for previous Windows versions when the newest ones come out. This will happen with Windows 7 soon enough, and unless you are a computer whiz you don’t want to be left without technical support.

Another good reason to make the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is the improvements in performance. Windows 10 will improve several areas of your computer’s performance, like boot time, and gaming performance. Windows 10 has Direct X 12, while Windows 7 users are stuck with Direct X 11. Windows 10 also offers some improvement in the areas of power management, and hardware acceleration, which means you can stay on longer, and it won’t beat on your machine or phone if you do.

There are some other great performance improvements as well. Anyone who has ever tried to find files in Windows Explorer with Windows 7 knows it can be a pain. Windows 10 makes that easier with improvements on some things they tried to introduce with Windows 8. The Share ribbon makes it easier to move files from one place to another, and also makes it easier to add files to things like Skype and Outlook. Windows 10 has also brought back the Up button, which a lot of people loved and missed when it wasn’t included with Windows 7. All the buttons are up in the top ribbon which makes them easier to find when you need them.Windows-10-Preview-Users-Will-Get-RTM-for-Free-484829-2

Those people who have multiple monitors hooked up to their home computer will be happy to learn that Windows 10 has made some improvements on dual screen performance. Sure you can do dual screen with windows 7, but you can only use one background for each screen, and you can’t split certain tasks like slideshows between screens. With Windows 10 splitting things up is now a lot easier, and you can put whatever background you like on each of your displays individually.

Windows 10 has some exciting new features that could make the switch worth your time. With Windows 10 Microsoft has introduced Continuum. Continuum makes it possible for you to run the same version of Windows on all of your computing devices including laptops and smart phones. This is kind of like the one that Apple came out with earlier, but since a lot of Windows users avoid Apple like the plague we are all happy to see this come out in Windows.

And of course we can’t talk about Windows 10 without mentioning Cortana. Cortana is Microsoft’s answer to Siri. But Cortana is bigger, better and smarter. It does a lot more than Siri does. It can help you organize and find files when you need them. It can help you keep track of appointments on your calendar, and it also improves the search experience by doing it for you. You just type or tell Cortana what you are looking for and it finds it. (Since it’s an app and not a person, I am not going to use the word “she” to describe Cortana.) You can type to access Cortana, or if your computer has a microphone, you can talk to Cortana. The Cortana app also “learns” about you as you use it. It’s easier to use because you don’t have to go through a list of commands to access it, you can use your normal voice as long as it can be picked up by the microphone. You can also ask Cortana questions, and it will find the answers for you if they can be found by searching on the ximg_55ba0fbf3d313.png.pagespeed.ic.DNHz9LWxXeinternet.

Well after the big disappointment that was Windows 8, the people at Microsoft have saved some face with Windows 10. Some people might not like the fact that they look a lot alike, but all the other good things certainly outweigh cosmetic concerns. Windows 10 has retained some of the “flat” look that they introduced with Windows 8, although they did get rid of the garish colors. After a lot of research this author is going to go as far as to recommend you try Windows 10 for yourself. It’s still free until July of 2016, so what do you really have to lose?

Windows 10 Mobile – What to Expect

Apple’s stranglehold on mobile operating systems has begun to loosen in the last few years. With Android still appealing to those looking for cheaper smartphones and Microsoft breaking into the mobile market with their Windows phone, it looks as though the tech wars of the 90’s have been reborn. With Windows 10 coming our for mobile, Microsoft seems to be ready to challenge Apple’s dominance in mobile OS. Here are ten things you can expect from Windows latest mobile operating system.454774-windows-phone-10

1. Cross-platform connectivity

Windows 10 is an attempt to interconnect its array of devices using the same apps on desktop PCs, tablets, smartphones and even its Xbox One gaming console. They are even reporting that it will work with the upcoming HoloLens virtual reality device. At MWC 2015, the company announced that any device currently running Windows Phone 8.1 can be upgraded to Phone 10 by December 2015. This also means that you can use any app you download on your phone from any Microsoft device. An app you download from the Windows store will even work on your PC if it has WIndows 10 installed and will sync with all your Windows devices instantly. Microsoft is calling this feature “windows_10_mobile_salesUniversal app”.

2. New OS visual design.

The look of the Windows 10 OS has been dramatically altered. Every page now sports a translucent background which indicates that placing an image for your background will still be visible no matter what content your interacting with without being a distraction.

3.Improved User interface

Windows 10’s settings screen menu resembles a PC menu rather than a mobile OS menu. Also, the new “Download Tank” allows users to access recently downloaded apps with a quick right-swipe. Some may prefer this to feature most often used or favorite apps in this tank not on the home screen, but it’s hard not argue that this is still a step towards streamlining app access instead of scrolling down the app index to the alphabetical location.

4. Updated notifications and saved progress across platforms

This function allows to check alerts on one device and not be reminded to check the same alert on anther device. This interconnectivity even extends to activities started with an app on one device and continuing it with your saved revisions on another Windows device.

5. New Web Browserwindows-10-mobile-06_story

Microsoft that renamed it’s older Internet Explorer browser to Microsoft edge. This latest version of Windows classic web browser promises to be just as customizable and user-friendly as Chrome, Safari or Firefox. Browser histories will be save on all devices with Windows 10 install, both desktop and mobile.

6. Improved Personal Assistant

Microsoft’s answer to Siri, Cortana, has been upgraded to include better voice command and search responses, more connectivity with other Windows apps and more accurate search results. While initial results showed a slight decrease in voice responsiveness from Windows Phone 8.1, the developers ensure tech journalist reviewing the preliminary models back in the summer of 2015 that it will be up to that previous OS’s standard. Microsoft is also promising that Cortana will also send email via voice command upon Windows 10’s release. Third party apps specifically for Cortana are also currently being developed and could emerge in 2016.

7. New Text Editing tools

The new OS can edit text in the same way as Microsoft Word. This means that you’ll be able to cut, paste, copy, customize text and fonts and sizes in the same manner as you would a Office document.

8. New Task Switcher

Holding the back button will allow access to four different apps in this switcher rather than scrolling sideways between all the apps you’re currently using, creating a smoother experience.

This newest Microsoft mobile OS seems to offer more collaborative functionality, improved design and a mobile experience closer to that off using a desktop PC rather than a typical smartphone or tablet experience. Whether or not this reimagining of Microsoft’s mobile design will succeed commercially may depend on the user’s comfort level. Those with more desktop experience most likely will be relieved to see a smartphone or tablet behaving like the mini-computer it is. But the modern incarnation of the smart device has been a feature in our lives for so long (Apple’s iPhone came out way back in 2007) that users who have grown accustomed to swipes and touch screen controls may see this as more confusing instead of easier to use. It all depends on what you’re used to the most.

Best Windows Productivity Apps

Computers do nothing without the help of apps that make life easier. Increased productivity is what we all aim at. And since Microsoft is very much involved in publishing frequent updates on their OS, it’s worth the effort of finding a few apps that can increase your productivity. What do you think?

Here is a list of some essential Windows productivity apps you should make use of

1 LaunchyHolo_3172858b

For you to increase your productivity, you should work with a super efficient system that launches apps in a matter of seconds. With Launchy, you can launch programs really fast by only using a few keystrokes on your computer.

What’s more, this program lets you perform multiple tasks at the same time. For example, it’s possible to open documents and folders, kill processes slowing down your computer, perform calculations or even search the web and do other complicated stuff like starting SSH sessions.

It should be noted that Launchy  isn’t the only application launcher designed for Windows. However, it’s one of the best programs out there to work with on your Windows system.

2 Evernote and ResophNotes

It’s a fact that each one of us need to jot down and store their notes and clipping somewhere. But even though this is the case, a few individuals will still have unique needs not addressed by the typical note taking software. This category of individuals also have something dedicated for their special needs.

Therefore, as for this note-taking pack, we have two programs called Evernote and ResophNotes. Evernote tends to be more of a filing cabinet for web clipping, notes and just about anything else you will need for your office work.

On the other hand, ResophNotes help you sync plain text notes through Dropbox or SimpleNote, which lets you get back to work fast and efficiently.

Evernote may seem like an overkill especially for the first time user. It takes familiarizing yourself with its UI before it can ever become an indispensable equipment for work and play.

3 PhraseExpress

Typing texts should be a priority for any task you carry out during the day. Typing is already a tedious process for you. So why don’t you make it easier by only using a few keystrokes (thanks to PhraseExpress) to write your bits of code, canned email addresses, or anything else fast and conveniently?

This platform is designed to save you hours of typing. In fact, it’s the best typing option for Windows, though it has a few pitfalls here and there. But once you’ve got a hang of what’s happening here, perhaps you might consider upgrading to a service like Breevy.The-Paper-App-Divas-Wanderlust

4 Wunderlist

These days we have lots of to-do apps. It’s quite easy to get overwhelmed. However, when it comes to choosing the best ones, it depends on your style of getting tasks done. However, if you still have to pick the best among the best, then Wunderlist would simply make it to the top of the list, why? Because it’s a free platform which syncs to the cloud, plus it exists on just about any device you might want to use it on.

In fact, this is exactly how you want to craft your to-do list, isn’t it? Just make it easy to add your to-do list and also move tasks. Once you know how the setup works, you can easily move on to doing them at the right time.

5 LibreOffice, or perhaps Microsoft officelibreoffice-logo-100565083-large

When you realize that Google Docs isn’t giving you enough in your Word processing needs, the focus must turn to something else. A good choice to opt for is LibreOffice. It’s a free, cross-platform office suite with all the features you’d want in your Word processing endeavors.

Essentially, it’s a Word Processor, Presentation creator and a Spreadsheet tool as well. All these features should make it easy to work on your documents fast and efficiently.

But in case you’re still not satisfied, then it’s recommended that you work with the traditional Microsoft office tools. As for those who are interested in viewing their documents from any device, they can do so using Microsoft Office Viewers. It’s fast and convenient for those who love working with texts and images.

Boost your productivity with the top apps and platforms listed above. We’re not saying they are the best though. But certainly, it’s a fact that these tools will get you completing tasks sooner than expected, and this is a good thing when it comes to boosting your productivity.

Best Convertible Windows Laptops

Convertible/2-in-1/Hybrid laptops are not only more popular than ever but more powerful and better suited for entertainment, studies, and work as well. The best Windows laptops all have a few things in common: portability, usage as a tablet and laptop, processor speed, graphics performance, and ease of transformation from laptop to tablet and vis versa.15386936806_87e8c6db65_b

Microsoft Surface Pro 3

With high portability, light weight, and options for different keyboard colors, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 has made waves in its innovative creation of a true tablet that can turn into a laptop with a quick click of a connected keyboard.

The Specs:

  • The Surface Pro 3 contains a powerful CPU with a 1.9GHz Intel Core i5-4300U (Dual Core, 3MB Cache, and up to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost);
  • Intel HD Graphics 4400 card; 8GB LPDDR3 of RAM;
  • a 12-inch 2160 x 1440 multi-touch display screen with ClearType 3:2 aspect ratio.
  • With 256GB SSD and Bluetooth 4.0, this hybrid has the specs to defy a full-sized laptop.
  • In addition, the Pro 3 has two 5MP webcams in 1080p HD resolution and weighs only 1.76lbs.
  • With a dimension of 7.93W x 11.5D x 0.36H inches, this sharp displayed and powerful convertible Windows laptop rivals almost anything a laptop can offer while far exceeding anything a normal tablet can do.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 was created as the apex of convertible laptops, with excellent conversion into a tablet or laptop and a sharp display. While it has a rather mediocre battery life and runs a little hot sometimes, it is perfect for those who need to study or work on the go, using as little of a workstation footprint as possible.3

HP Spectre x360

The Specs:

  • This Windows 8.1 convertible laptop comes equipped with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i5-5200U processor, 8GB of RAM with ability to upgrade to 16GB, 256GB SSD,
  • a display of 13.3-inches, 1080p resolution,
  • Intel HG Graphics 5500, an HDMI port, headphone/mic ports,
  • Mini Display port, a 2-1 card reader, and weighs almost three times as much as the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 at 3.26lbs.

Don’t let the weight of this convertible fool you, however; the positive of this 2-1 tablet/laptop is that the keyboard is a full-size laptop keyboard rather than an attachable one like the Pro 3 and other tablets-first-laptops-last computers. It does make it a little difficult to use as a tablet unless you have it on a table, propped, or in your lap. However, if you are interested in a powerful hybrid with more laptop aspects to it than tablet, you may wish to consider the HP Spectre x360. This can give you more computational options than a hybrid that is more similar to a tablet with a small or attachable keyboard.

The HP Spectre x360 is a very capable and functional convertible laptop that is perfect for students and for work as well as entertainment.

Asus Transformer Book T200TA

If you are looking for something different than both the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and the HP Spectre x360, which both embody the differences that 2-in-1 convertible laptops can come in, consider the Asus Transformer Book T200 model.

The Specs:

  • With a different processor than seen in other hybrids, the Asus comes equipped with a 2.39GHz Intel Bay Trail-T Quad Core Z3795 1.59GHz processor and comes standard with Windows 8.1.
  • With memory of 4GB LPDDR3MHz SDRAM and an 11.6-inch 16:9 IPS HD Multi-Touch Screen (1366 x 768),
  • this hybrid contains an Integrated Intel HD Graphics card.
  • In addition, it has 64GB of eMMC storage and a Micro SD card reader; a front 2 MP camera and a rear 5 MP camera.

Another feature is the interface’s built-in Bluetooth V4.0 and the following ports: 1 microphone-in/headphone-out jack, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 RJ45 LAN Jack for LAN insert, 1 Micro USB, and 1 micro HDMI. The tablet has 1 micro USB port and 1 micro SD card. The hybrid also has 2 built-in speakers and a digital array microphone. With a weight of 3.6lbs and dimensions of 12 x 7.9 x 1.0 inches, this is another laptop-first, tablet second hybrid that may weigh more but also has more power and laptop abilities than a tablet with some laptop features.

While the display is not 1080p, it is still HD and for those who do not plan on using this 2-in-1 for uses that need perfect resolution (such as graphic artists, web designers, or those planning on using this hybrid for entertainment purposes), this is an excellent and different convertible laptop that is unlike others on the market.

Windows 10 TV Preview – A Windows TV?

Videocon unveiled a range of Windows 10-based LED TVs at the very end of October, 2015, in New Delhi, India. Starting at Rs. 39990 (e.g., 39,990 Indian Rupees) for the 32” model, equivalent to $611.42 in the current U.S. market; and Rs. 52,990 for the 40” model, this unveiling has been met with some excitement about the future of hybrid TVs. Windows 10 TVs are expected to hit the market as soon as the next month in November of 2015, but only in India for the time being.

The demand from consumers to create and consolidate technologies has been realized in the form of a Windows 10 TV, which would be the world’s first Windows hybrid TV & PC. The Head of Technology and Innovation at Videocon, Akshay Dhoot, has stated that they have only launched 32” and 40” models which are popular in the consumer segment. Depending on the feedback from the consumers, critics, and tech companies, if the response is good, they are ready to launch sizes of 55”, 65”, and 24”.

The Windows 10 TVmaxresdefault

The Windows 10 TV has a full HD Display, 16 GB of internal memory that can be expanded via microSD card, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, MHL interface for connecting mobile devices and tablets and charging them, HDMI ports and Wi-Fi built in. Android has already made an introduction to the television market, but Windows is sure they can provide a dependable product in these new TVs. With the popularity of streaming services, On Demand streaming, satellite television, and other Wi-Fi enabled apps found on Wi-Fi connected flat screens, the norm is now integrated technology.

The interesting feature about a Windows 10 TV is that it can also work as a personal computer. With size no longer an issue, Videocon’s “One Touch PC, One Touch TV,” comes equipped with Microsoft Office, Windows Store, and All Cast app by Android so users can cast streaming media from mobile devices easily. This integration means that no matter what the size, large or small, these Windows 10 TVs will essentially be an all-in-one touchscreen PC, powered by Intel processors. And in an instant, the user can twitch from this touchscreen capable PC to a regular, but more high-tech Windows 10 television.

This integration of television and computers have been in the making for a while now, and it was only a matter of time before someone took a chance in developing a more integrated TV. We have had Smart TVs that are Wi-Fi enabled applications able to connect to streaming services and social media via the internet, but to turn the television itself into a PC rather than a vessel capable of connecting to one—that’s a huge leap in the world of technology. The great thing about this development, is that the hardware to power Windows is not really expensive. For example, the quad-core Compute Stick retails on the market for only $149.00, and as more apps and games are streamed from the internet, the need for a large amount of storage space locally, diminishes significantly. Think of it as storing in the “Cloud” rather than on-board in a PC or electronic device.windows10-phone-continuum

Videocon has finally bridged the gap between quasi-computerized televisions and their mobile or streaming connecting device needed for it to work, withwindows_live_tv_concept_by_metroui-d473fa4 a full-blown integration of PC and TV. With this new and innovative release, Windows 10 can be experienced by more users in an innovative, new way. The user can easily switch between Windows 10 PC and a Windows 10 TV. Should the reception go well in India, and global releases are launched, living rooms everywhere may have the option of containing a work and entertainment hub who’s TV is inter-connected with smartphones, PCs, tablets, and all Windows technology. It is not likely that Indian electronics manufacturer, Videocon’s, Windows 10 TVs will make their way to the U.S., but manufacturers in the U.S. and around the globe, including the most popular, trusted, and capable, may consider developing their own Windows 10 smart TVs.

This could be significant on many levels. A new market would form, television would change forever, as would home entertainment. In addition to the “fun” parts of this development, such as Xbox One streaming capabilities for those gamers (the Xbox users would have to be on the same network but could be on different screens), and watching films and TV shows via streaming services; users would suddenly have the ability to access their apps and data from anywhere there is a Windows 10 TV.

Think about the countless times in class or at work when you were getting ready for a presentation. Your set-up included likely included inserting a thumb/flash drive, tethering your laptop to a desktop/projector, or opening your presentation file from an online storage cloud or email. But with this new integration, any Windows 10 TV could be turned into your computer—by logging into your Microsoft account and retrieving your information from any of these TV/PCs. And to finish, simply log-off. And with Windows 10’s security features of print and face recognition as password options, it would be interesting to see if security too, would be safer, accessing information from public Windows 10 televisions.

In the coming months, we shall see if Videocon’s televisions take off amongst consumers. Hopefully, manufacturers will take an interest in this idea and begin creating better versions and selling them on the global market to see how they fare. In the end, consumer and critic reviews in India as well as unveilings among other companies, will all depend on whether the Windows 10 TV will ever reach our shores and expand into homes across the world.

Best Windows Laptops for Under $500

Buying a laptop can be stressful. It involves a lot of research. Laptops can also be expensive. You don’t want to spend too much or too little, right? I’ve compiled information for some of the best laptops that you can find for fewer than five hundred dollars. These laptops all contain the Windows program and are useful for a variety of things.

The Dell Inspiron 5447dell-inspiron-5447-left-1000-1036225

This Dell is about 380 dollars. Loaded with Windows 8, this fifteen-inch laptop is lightweight and even has a touchscreen. The battery on a full charge lasts for around seven hours and its Intel core i5 processor ensures that games, applications, and websites load very quickly. This has eight gigabytes (GB) of ram, so you’re able to do a lot of things at once without hindering the performance of the computer. There’s plenty of space to store photos, videos, and music. With a 720 pixel webcam, and sharp HD display, video editing, and recording can run smoothly. There are USB and media card reader ports for an easy transfer of files. This computer works best for the gamer personnel as well as creative videographers.

Dell Latitude XT2

The next Dell laptop is slightly cheaper at 340 dollars. This one, called the Dell Latitude (XT2), with only two GB of ram is more suited for professional use. If you’re focused on writing documents with a laptop of a twelve-hour battery life this one is perfect for you. This laptop is twelve inches long with an Intel core 2 duo ULV processor, so it still has decent performance. The best part about this laptop is the fact that the screen can flip around to create a tablet mode. In both PC and tablet mode, this computer enables touch screen on its premium LED display. It has the Windows 7 program loaded on it. There’s no camera on this one, but it does have a card reader and a Bluetooth option available.

Acer Aspire E

Another good brand is called Acer. The Acer Aspire E with the Windows 8 program comes at a low price of 230 dollars. It has eleven inches, light, and comes loaded with various office applications. Unlike the Dell Latitude, this one has a webcam and it is very useful for Skype to connect you with family and friends. With only two GB of ram, it still has reliable performance. It’s equipped with an HDMI port to hook your laptop up to your television for the ultimate entertainment experience. With a battery life of five hours and a Bluetooth option, you better get that business work done fast!

Acer Aspire ES

Next, we have this Acer Aspire ES topping out at about 480 dollars. This fifteen-inch computer with Windows 10 is perfect for the everyday user. With four GB of ram this time, it’s reliable for daily tasks. You can do more things at the same time and have a safe and secure storage system with Acer’s Build Your Own Cloud program. You’re able to store plenty of files, and chat with your family in good quality with the webcam and powerful speaker system. It also comes equipped with a USB port, HDMI port, Bluetooth, and even a DVD burner.

Lenovo Thht_lenovo_ideapad_yoga_jt_121110_wbinkpad

Maybe you’re thinking about trying the Lenovo brand. I would suggest looking into the Lenovo Thinkpad for about 400 dollars. This fourteen inch, with four GB of ram, laptop comes loaded with Windows 7. The Intel core i5 processor makes it easy and reliable to use for everyday activities, as well as gaming, watching videos, and for professional business projects. If you think that’s too much for your machine to handle, you can expand the memory up to eight GB. The appliance’s language setting only comes with English, so if you want the French setting too then you’ll have to look into one of the laptops mentioned above. There’s no camera, HDMI port, or Bluetooth, however, it does have a DVD burner, headphone jack, USB port, and card reader. It doesn’t have it all, but it has enough to be an extremely reliable laptop.

Asus Refurbished laptop

The final brand I’m going to discuss is called Asus. The Asus Refurbished laptop goes for about 390 dollars. With Windows 8, four GB of ram, and an Intel core i3 processor, it too has an English-only setting. Unlike the Lenovo, it has a webcam, Bluetooth, and an HDMI port. It also comes with a DVD burner and card reader. This is another machine meant for the average user. I wouldn’t recommend any gaming on this one unless you enjoy lagging. Even though it only has about four hours of battery life on a full charge, it is a very energy efficient computer.

All of these laptops are useful for different things. Make sure that you know what you want out of your machine in order to purchase the one that’s right for you.

The Xbox One Preview Program has been in full swing for a few months. Members have sent feedback to ensure the most flawless update possible.

One of the most impressive features of this upgrade is the implementation of Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual attendant. “Our plan is to add Cortana to the Xbox One experience later this year. From there, we’ll ensure that the experience is tuned for gamers before we officially launch Cortana in 2016,” director for programming at Xbox Live, Larry Hryb stated.

The reasoning for the delay is not known but, it’s likely due to the lasting problems with the Windows 10 operating system upgrades in July of this year.

Cortana will become your personal gaming assistant. Utilizing voice commands on the Xbox One console, Cortana will accomplish simple tasks such as, assist you in finding other gamers, find new games and new friends.

Happy gaming!
